Jigsaw Puzzle

Each piece usually has a small part of a picture on it; when complete, a jigsaw puzzle produces a complete picture. Many participants begin by sorting pieces by color and edge pieces. Edge pieces are those with a flat side, which will form the puzzle’s border. Make sure you have the picture (solution) of the puzzle for them to look at. For individuals with more advanced dementia, puzzles with larger pieces and fewer total pieces (e.g., 12 pieces) may be more suitable.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Solving jigsaw puzzles helps maintain and may enhance cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Memory Recall: Working with familiar images can trigger memories and reinforce recognition skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling and fitting the puzzle pieces together improves hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
