2 Pieces Puzzles Match It! States & Capitals - D1-D2
Return to Puzzles

This activity is for early-stage to middle-stage dementia. It's a calm and engaging way to support memory, spark conversation, and provide a sense of accomplishment. The goal is to match U.S. states with their corresponding capital cities using colorful cards.

  1. Set Up: Spread out a small number of state and capital cards face up. Start with just 4–6 pairs to avoid overwhelm by color of states (blue, purple, orange, yellow).
  2. Explain Simply: Say something like, “Let’s find which state goes with which capital. It’s like putting together little puzzle pieces.”
  3. Offer Support: If they’re unsure, gently prompt them: “Do you remember which state has Atlanta as the capital?” or offer clues like “Atlanta is in the south.”
  4. Celebrate Effort: Focus on encouragement, not correctness. Praise participation: “Great try!” or “You remembered that one from our road trip, didn’t you?”
  5. Adjust to Their Needs: If it’s too easy, add more pairs. Encourage them: “Now it’s your turn to match the rest.
  6. Encourage: If stuck, give a clue: “Atlanta is in the southeast.” If they match correctly, celebrate: “Yes! Atlanta goes with Georgia. Well done!”
