Four Piece Jigsaw Puzzle
Return to Puzzles

Four‑piece jigsaw puzzles are a way to support visual recognition, problem‑solving, fine‑motor skills, and a sense of success. For dementia residents, the goal is engagement and enjoyment—not completing the puzzle perfectly.

How to Introduce the Activity

  • Place the puzzle pieces and the board or frame on the table within easy reach.
  • Keep the environment calm and uncluttered.
  • Offer one piece at a time if the full set feels overwhelming.

“Let’s work on this puzzle together. It has just a few big pieces, and each one has a special place where it fits. Let’s look at this piece first.”

  • Hold up a piece and describe it gently:
“This one has part of the flower on it. Let’s see where that might go.”
  • Point to the matching area or guide their hand if needed:
“Try placing it right here. That’s it.”
  • Encourage exploration:
“Let’s turn it a little and see if it fits better.”
  • Celebrate effort:
“Nice job. You’re really noticing the picture.”

  • Encourages visual recognition and matching
  • Strengthens fine‑motor coordination
  • Supports problem‑solving in a low‑pressure way
  • Builds confidence through small, achievable successes
