Treasure Hunt

Using uncooked rice or beans to bury objects like seashells, coins, and other small items can be an engaging and therapeutic activity for individuals with dementia. This activity stimulates cognitive functions, enhances fine motor skills, and provides sensory engagement.

Materials: Collect a large container, uncooked rice, and a variety of small objects such as seashells, coins, buttons, or small toys. Fill the container with uncooked rice or beans, leaving some space at the top for easy digging. Bury the small objects in the rice, making sure they are well-distributed and not visible from the surface. Explain the task to the participant, showing them how to dig through the rice to find the hidden objects.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Searching for and identifying objects helps may enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Digging through the rice and handling small objects can enhance dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling rice and the visual stimulation from finding different objects can be soothing and engaging.
