Bird Feeder

Using pinecones, peanut butter, and bird seed is a wonderful activity for individuals with dementia. This activity engages cognitive functions, enhances fine motor skills, and provides sensory stimulation. It also encourages a connection with nature and can be highly rewarding.

Materials: Collect pinecones, peanut butter, bird seed, string or yarn, and a spoon or butter knife for spreading the peanut butter. Cover the surface with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect it from any mess. Tie a piece of string or yarn around the top of each pinecone for hanging later. Explain the task to the participant, showing them how to use the spoon or knife to spread peanut butter all over the pinecone. Once the pinecone is covered in peanut butter, roll it in a dish of bird seed until it is fully coated.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Following the steps to create the bird feeders helps may enhance memory, attention, and sequencing skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling the pinecones, spreading the peanut butter, and rolling them in bird seed can enhance dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling the materials and the visual stimulation from creating bird feeders can be soothing and engaging.
  • Connection with Nature: This activity encourages a connection with nature and can provide opportunities for observing birds, which can be calming and enjoyable.
