Building a Flashlight

Building a flashlight can be a highly engaging and beneficial activity for individuals with dementia. This activity helps stimulate cognitive functions, enhance fine motor skills, and provide sensory engagement.

You will need a flashlight kit or separate components, such as a flashlight body, batteries, bulb, reflector, and screws. Explain the task to the participant. Show them the different parts of the flashlight and explain their functions. Start with a simple demonstration of how to assemble the flashlight. Explain how to insert the batteries, connect the bulb, and fit the reflector.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Assembling the parts of a flashlight involves following steps, which may enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling small parts like batteries, bulbs, and screws can enhance dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling the components and the visual stimulation from the light can be soothing and engaging.
