Painting Wood

Painting wood can be a highly engaging and therapeutic activity for individuals with dementia. This activity combines creativity, sensory stimulation, and fine motor skills, offering several benefits.

Collect pieces of wood, non-toxic paints, brushes of various sizes, water for cleaning brushes, and a work area cover (like newspaper or plastic tablecloth). Explain the task to the participant. Show them the different colors of paint and brushes available. Start with a simple demonstration of how to dip the brush in the paint and apply it to the wood. Show different brush techniques and how to clean the brush between colors.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Choosing colors, planning designs, and executing the painting process may enhance memory, attention, and decision-making skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling paintbrushes and applying paint enhances dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of holding the paintbrush, the visual stimulation from the colors, and the smell of the paint can be soothing and engaging.
