Compass with N/S/E/W Markers

A compass with N/S/E/W markers can be an engaging and educational activity for individuals with dementia. This activity helps stimulate cognitive functions, enhances memory and spatial awareness, and provides sensory engagement.

You will need a compass and some markers or cards labeled with the cardinal directions: North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W). Explain the task to the participant. Show them the compass and how it works. Explain how the needle always points to the magnetic north. Demonstrate how to hold the compass flat and rotate it until the needle points to North. Show how to use the directional markers to identify North, South, East, and West.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Learning about directions and how to use a compass may enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Spatial Awareness: Understanding and using directional markers helps enhance spatial awareness and orientation.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling the compass and the visual stimulation from the directional markers can be soothing and engaging.
