Wreath Making

Wreath making can be a wonderfully therapeutic and creative activity for individuals with dementia. This activity engages multiple senses, stimulates cognitive functions, and improves fine motor skills.

Materials Needed: A wreath base (such as a foam ring or a wire frame), a variety of materials for decorating (e.g., artificial or real flowers, leaves, berries, ribbons, pinecones), scissors, glue, and floral wire.

Explain the task to the participant. Show them the materials and explain how to attach the decorations to the wreath base. Start with a simple demonstration of how to attach a few decorations to the wreath base using glue or floral wire. Encourage the participant to follow along.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Planning and creating a wreath may enhance memory, attention, and decision-making skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling the various materials, arranging them, and securing them to the wreath base enhances dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling different materials, the visual stimulation from colors and textures, and the scents from natural elements provide soothing sensory input.
