Watering Plants

Watering plants can be a therapeutic and engaging activity for individuals with dementia. It provides sensory stimulation, promotes a sense of responsibility, and connects individuals with nature.

You will need a watering can or spray bottle, and a selection of indoor or outdoor plants. Choose plants that are easy to care for and non-toxic. Explain the importance of watering plants and show the participant how to water them properly.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Remembering to water the plants and observing their growth may enhance memory and attention.
  • Motor Skills: Handling the watering can and pouring water enhances dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling plants, the visual appeal of green foliage, and the smell of soil and water provide soothing sensory input.
