Dusting
Dusting can be a therapeutic and engaging activity for individuals with dementia. This simple task provides cognitive stimulation, encourages fine motor skills, and helps create a sense of accomplishment.
You will need a soft cloth or a microfiber duster and a gentle, non-toxic cleaning spray if needed. Set up a comfortable and well-lit area with items that need dusting, such as shelves, tables, or countertops. Explain the task to the participant. Show them the duster or cloth and demonstrate how to dust the surfaces.
- Cognitive Stimulation: Following the steps to dust and remembering where to clean may enhance memory, attention, and sequencing skills.
- Motor Skills: Handling the duster or cloth and performing the repetitive motions of dusting enhance dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Physical Activity: Dusting involves gentle physical activity that can help maintain overall fitness and well-being.
- Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling the cloth and the visual satisfaction of a clean surface provide sensory stimulation.
