Cutting Fruits and Vegetables

Cutting up fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, or bananas can be a therapeutic and engaging activity for individuals with dementia. Using a plastic knife ensures safety while still providing the benefits of the task.

You will need a plastic knife, a cutting board, and the food items (cucumbers, tomatoes, or bananas). Explain the task to the participant. Show them the food items and the plastic knife, and explain how to cut the food safely.

  • Cognitive Stimulation: Following the steps to cut and prepare the food may enhance memory, attention, and sequencing skills.
  • Motor Skills: Handling the knife and cutting the food enhances dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory Engagement: The tactile experience of handling the food, the visual appeal of the cut pieces, and the smells provide soothing sensory input.
