Morning Spark: Person‑Centered Activities for All Levels of Dementia for 5-6 Residents

Caregiver Note

Morning Spark activities are designed to gently activate the brain, build confidence, and create a positive start to the day. Each activity is visual, simple, and adaptable for early, middle, and late stages of dementia. The focus is always on engagement—not perfection.

Word Listing with Letter Tiles (Early–Middle Stage)

Supports word recall, spelling, and visual recognition.

  • Begin with the picture or theme to anchor understanding.
  • Offer only the tiles needed for success, or add extras for a challenge.
  • Use gentle cues: “Which letters do you think we need first?”
  • Celebrate effort: “You found that letter so quickly.”

Why it works:
It taps into long‑held language skills and gives residents a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Matching Activities (All stages)

Includes picture‑to‑picture or picture‑to‑word matching.

  • Early–middle stage: encourage reading aloud if they enjoy it.
  • Middle–late stage: focus on simple, colorful image matching.
  • Offer supportive prompts: “Let’s find the pair together.”

Why it works:
Matching is familiar, calming, and accessible for nearly every resident, helping them warm up their thinking for the day.

 Photo Puzzles (All Levels)

Simple, meaningful images cut into 2–6 pieces.

  • Start by showing the full picture first to reduce anxiety.
  • Guide them to connect edges or colors.
  • Offer reassurance: “You’re putting this together beautifully.”

Why it works:
Photo puzzles support visual processing and problem‑solving while connecting residents to familiar, comforting images.

Two‑Piece Head & Tail Puzzles (Middle to Late Stage)

A simple, success‑oriented puzzle where residents match the front and back of an object or animal.

  • Present one piece at a time to avoid overwhelm.

  • Use gentle cues: “Which one looks like it belongs with this?”

  • Celebrate completion with warmth and enthusiasm.

Why it works: These puzzles are quick wins—perfect for building confidence, supporting visual matching, and encouraging engagement across all cognitive levels.

Caregiver Tips for Success

  • Keep it relaxed. A calm tone helps residents feel safe and willing to try.
  • Model first. Demonstrate one example before inviting them to continue.
  • Offer choice. “Would you like matching or a photo puzzle today.”
  • Step back when needed. Some residents engage better with quiet space.
  • End on a win. Stop while they’re still feeling successful and confident.
