Counting and Sorting Monopoly Money
A simple, hands‑on activity using familiar play money to support focus, confidence, and gentle cognitive engagement.
This activity uses brightly colored Monopoly bills to encourage visual sorting, basic counting, fine‑motor movement, and a calm sense of accomplishment. It removes all game rules and focuses only on matching and organizing.
Use a friendly, reassuring tone:
“I brought some colorful play money for us to look at together. We’re just sorting it by color and counting a little, nice and easy.”
Place a small pile of bills on the table—only a few denominations at first to avoid overwhelm.
Start with demonstration
Pick up one bill and point to its color.
“This one is yellow. I’ll place it in the yellow group.”
Invite participation
Offer the next bill.
“Would you like to find the color on this one and place it with the others?”
Keep choices simple
Lay out 2–3 color “stations” using colored paper or bowls (yellow, pink, blue, etc.).
Add gentle counting
Once a small pile is sorted, say:
“Let’s see how many yellow ones we have. We can count them together.”
Use supportive prompts
Model instead of correcting
If a bill goes in the “wrong” pile, simply demonstrate with the next one. The goal is engagement, not accuracy.
